POSITION OVERVIEW
The special education teacher is responsible for planning and implementing goals of the students Individual Education Program (IEP).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.
- Follows legal requirements as dictated by state and federal statutes.
- Instructs individuals and groups in special education skill areas.
- Plans curriculum, lessons, and special education programs and teaching methods.
- Evaluates and monitors student progress.
- Maintains physical environment of the classroom.
- Prepares report cards, educational records, classroom observation records, and other forms.
- Maintains communication system with parents/care givers of classroom students.
- Plans individual educational programs designed to meet student’s needs and conform to state and federal laws.
- Assumes responsibility for the development and implementation of specific objectives to meet the needs of each individual student.
- Maintains regular attendance.
JOB SPECIFIC SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- The ability to interact with public and other staff is required.
- Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program.
- Ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents and community.
- Ability to speak clearly and concisely in written or oral communication.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervises students and special education assistants for instruction purposes.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Valid teaching certificate with appropriate special education endorsement.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, managers, employees, clients, customers, and/or the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
- Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
- Ability to apply financial concepts and statistical inferences.
REASONING ABILITY:
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to use available information and develop long-term and short-term goals and objectives.

- The noise level in the environment is variable depending upon the activities in the environment.
- The employee must constantly work to meet deadlines.
- Certain teaching positions in special education dealing with more severely involved students will be at greater risk to exposure to infection than the average person; whereas, teachers working with behaviorally disordered students will be more involved with confrontational and assaultive behaviors.
